Associate Members

Associate Members reside within the Association’s membership area, are engaged primarily in travel industry-related public relations and have worked regularly with travel media for a minimum of one year. Associate Members must work within an office inside the 13-state MTJA membership region. Each Associate Member in good standing may designate an Alternate Associate Member to represent him or her at any MTJA meeting the Associate Member cannot attend. The Alternate Associate Member pays separate dues and may attend MTJA meetings in the Associate’s place, but does not have voting rights in MTJA elections and decision-making processes.

The MTJA Board intentionally limits the Active-to-Associate membership ratio to approximately 3:1 or 2:1 in order to preserve the primary identity of our group as a travel journalism association and to keep the focus on members who produce high-quality travel content. Official state representatives, representatives of major domestic and international airlines, and travel businesses with operations in multiple states are considered Exempt Members who enjoy all the privileges of Associate membership, but are not counted in the Active-to-Associate ratio.

Associate Membership is by application and requires sponsorship from two current MTJA members who have personal knowledge of the applicant’s paid, professional work and are familiar with his or her professional abilities. Each sponsor must complete a Sponsor Form.

Applicants for MTJA Associate Membership must submit:

  1. A completed Application for Associate Membership Form.
  2. A list of travel accounts or, in the case of Destination Marketing Organizations, a description of your area and its story potential.
  3. A letter on your organization’s letterhead from your immediate supervisor verifying your position and your tenure in that position. (Disregard if your company is a sole proprietorship.)
  4. A one-page letter detailing your experience in the travel industry, length of time in the field, percentage of time devoted to working with travel journalists, and any other pertinent information about your education and/or work within the travel industry.
  5. Two Sponsor Forms (sponsors may submit forms directly to the MTJA Administrative Office)
  6. A $50 non-refundable application fee
  7. OPTIONAL — Other applicable information such as travel-related honors, awards and affiliations.

Applicants for MTJA Alternative Associate Membership must submit:

A cover letter from the sponsoring Associate member indicating that the applicant is qualified and regularly assigned to provide media support services as a component of their position. No application form is required.

Applicants for MTJA official state representation must submit:

A written recommendation from the appropriate state tourism office director. No additional sponsor form or application fee is required.

Omission of any of the required items will result in the return of your application and prolong the consideration process.

Please submit all materials by mail to:
Midwest Travel Journalists Association, Inc.
Administrative Office
902 S. Randall Rd., Suite C311
St. Charles, IL 60174

Each application is considered in the context of MTJA’s current needs, size, geographic distribution and determination of quality. Acceptance is made upon review and recommendation by the Membership Committee with final approval by the MTJA Board. Membership is not automatically awarded when the requirements on the application form are met, but is at the discretion of the Membership Committee and the Board of Directors.

Applicants should be aware that all applications receive a thorough and careful review, a process that can take anywhere from 3 to 12 weeks or more depending on receipt of all materials, the ability of our committees and board to review, verify, evaluate and act. We will confirm receipt of applications as quickly as possible, and move expeditiously to maximize opportunities for new members to attend upcoming MTJA meetings.

Applicants will be notified about the results of the review process in a timely manner. Those accepted will be considered MTJA members in good standing only after payment of dues in the amount of $215 for Associate Members and $175 for Alternate Associates if membership is accepted between Jan. 1 and June 30; $107.50 for Associate Members and $87.50 if membership is accepted between July 1 and Dec. 31. Membership renewal thereafter is effective for a one-year period from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.
