What inspired you to pursue a career in travel writing, and how did you get started in this field? My inspiration originated in Medina, Ohio. Growing up, I was captivated by the TV show “The Love Boat” and especially loved the character Julie McCoy, who played a cruise director. Her adventurous lifestyle and the idea of traveling the world greatly influenced my aspirations. I wanted to explore the globe just like her. I got my start by contributing articles to the Columbus Dispatch, where I initially worked writing obituaries. Writing for the Dispatch allowed me to merge my love for storytelling with my passion for travel, eventually paving the way for a fulfilling freelance career in travel journalism.
Can you describe a particular assignment or project that you’re especially proud of and why it stands out to you? I’m especially proud of a story I wrote for the Cleveland Plain Dealer about a visit to Chicago where I participated in the city’s Greeter program. This assignment stands out because it allowed me to try new things thanks to the kindness of a stranger, Marianne Goss. She introduced me to her hometown, showed me how to navigate the subway system, and took me on a personalized tour of the Andersonville neighborhood. This experience gave me a deeper appreciation for Chicago and helped me see the city in a new light. The story also highlighted how the Chicago Greeter program, a free service that pairs visitors with locals, offers unique insights and connections that typical tourist experiences often miss. It was gratifying to share this aspect of Chicago with readers, emphasizing the city’s rich history and vibrant neighborhoods through the eyes of a local.

Network with other professionals, learn continuously, and be persistent. Embrace the digital world by maintaining a strong online presence through blogs and social media, and never underestimate the power of storytelling.
