The Midwest Travel Journalists Association was founded in 2017 to protect and upgrade the travel writing profession by offering opportunities to exchange ideas; encouraging high professional ideals; and helping to preserve, promote and improve communication between travel journalists and consumers. Membership is limited to travel journalists and public relations professionals who live and work in the Midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

There are two categories of MTJA membership — Active and Associate:

Category of membership must accurately reflect the applicant’s source of professional travel-related income and ethical allegiance. No member shall hold both Active and Associate memberships at the same time.

Benefits of MTJA membership:

Active members enjoy a positive affiliation with an integrity-rich group of highly qualified professional travel journalists and public relations/destination marketing representatives. By attending spring and fall conferences, members are able to generate interesting story ideas, develop professional contacts within our 13-state region and take part in valuable networking opportunities with fellow members. MTJA also offers opportunities to meet one-on-one with associate members during Media Marketplace events, attend professional development sessions and participate in awards programs. Learn more.

Associate membership provides unparalleled opportunities to develop relationships with award-winning travel writers, editors, columnists, photojournalists, reporters, book authors and bloggers who appreciate the Midwest and its travel destinations. Each conference includes a formal professional development session and a Media Marketplace where Associates interact one-on-one with Actives in 10-minute appointments to pitch story ideas. Additionally, Associate members informally discuss trends, best practices, workarounds and how to vet writers. Learn more.

Applications for MTJA membership are accepted throughout the year. Application forms are available here on our website and upon request from our administrative office.
